Put noise out of action in the gymnasium

Thursday June 17 2021

Squeaking basketball shoes, bouncing balls, screaming teenagers and blaring whistles. With peaks of up to 120 dB, well above the critical limit of 85 dB that can cause permanent hearing damage, the gymnasium is without doubt the loudest place in school. To make matters worse, the acoustics are often problematic, even though there are many acoustic solutions available.

Just think about it: a gymnasium or sports hall at school is almost by definition a large hall, usually with a concrete cast floor, concrete walls or hard walls and very high ceilings. An environment where reverberation and flutter echoes prevail. Combine this with students playing sports and you get hellish noise. After all, sound waves are not stopped, but rather reflected. Acoustic panels, on the other hand, absorb sound and can drastically reduce reverberation in sports halls.

Acoustic solutions that can take a hit

An additional challenge in sports halls and gymnasiums? The acoustic solutions must be able to withstand all that sporting violence. After all, a forcefully flying ball must not damage an acoustic wall panel or ceiling panel or cause it to come loose. Aim for robust acoustic solutions that are shockproof and ballproof, and can be attached with extra precision. Our D-Panel Sport wall and ceiling panels, for example, don't allow themselves to be knocked out.

The acoustic game strategy for your gymnasium

A sports hall is a challenging space. Its size, heavy use and fluttering echoes require a strong strategy and adapted acoustic solutions. Therefore, in gymnasiums and sports halls, we only give advice after a site visit where we map the entire space and its use. This way, we ensure an efficient approach with tailor-made acoustic solutions, where a healthy sports climate triumphs.
